The average cost for commissioned artwork really depends on the artist. What are the best practices for commissioning artwork from an artist?
1. Reach out to the artist you are hoping to work with to ensure they are open for commissions, most artists can be contacted through their social media, an email, or may be reached via gallery. Remember first impressions are everything! With so many artist in the world, tell them why you chose them.
2. Once your commission has been accepted to ensure transparency, let the artist know what you want and how much freedom the artist has to create. I have had commissions from dog owners who want specific colors and backgrounds. I have also had commissions from couples who want me to recreate a special moment from a picture and they were open to my creative expression.
3. Reference images, if you as a client have seen another piece of art you loved and want to recreate, let your artist know! We don't read minds and we want to help you recreate your vision. However we cannot do that if you don't share viable information. Details, details, details.
4. Once you have finalized all details pertaining to the piece of art you are commissioning, a contract should be drawn, either by you or the artist.
